New Language Lab Opens at Forsyth Tech

Monday, March 24, 2008
On February 14th, Forsyth Tech dedicated the Mechtild Montgomery Language Lab in the Technology/Student Services Building.  The lab was created with a gift from Mary Montgomery Tucker, and is named in honor of Mrs. Tucker's mother, who spoke five languages and taught English and languages in high school.

Forsyth Tech President, Dr. Gary Green, spoke during the dedication, and several faculty members demonstrated the language lab's capabilities.

Dr. P. Nathanael Gough, Chairman of the Humanities and Communication department at Forsyth Tech, says the lab fills a need that the college has had for some time. “The importance of having a vibrant language lab at Forsyth Tech cannot be overstated. The demographics of Forsyth County and all of North Carolina suggest a real need for trained bilingual speakers in the workforce,” he pointed out. “Healthcare workers, law-enforcement and other emergency service agencies are expressing the need for employees who are able to communicate in languages other than English.”

Rosetta Stone software provides both credit and non-credit students with access to state-of-the-art language-learning equipment. With the assistance of four staff members, the language lab offers students the ability to learn the following languages: French, Spanish, German, Italian, Greek, Russian, Polish, Arabic, and Mandarin Chinese.
